Gordon Evans Sylvester, 93, husband, father and grandfather, passed away Monday, January 4, 2010.
Gordon was born Sept. 17, 1916, in Seattle, Washington. Gordon, also known as "Gordy" or "Sy," represented the very best of his generation. His life was one of devotion to career and family. As a boy, he tracked the reaches of the Skagit River country in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. An interest in electronics and amateur radio led to his receiving a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Washington in 1939. He was awarded membership in Tau Beta Pi, the oldest engineering honor society in the United States. For two summers, Gordon served as a fire lookout with the U.S. Forest Service in the Snoqualmie National Forest. Those summers served as a watershed of spiritual experience upon which he would draw throughout his life.
In 1939, he began a career in aviation manufacturing that would span a profound range of historical events and technological developments. Initially, working for Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego, California, Sy contributed to the development of the PBY Catalina seaplane. He served as the lead electrical engineer for the B-24 Liberator bomber.
In 1942, he met and married Dora Carnine, a young draftsman who was one of the first of the swelling workforce of women who took on manufacturing responsibilities during World War II. To them, a daughter, Cheryl, was born in 1950 and a son, James, in 1952.
From 1942 to 1949, Sy worked at the Fort Worth division of Consolidated-Vultee Aircraft (later Convair). He was responsible for the development of lightweight 400 cycle (Hz) alternating current systems for the XB-32 and XB-36 aircraft. The innovation of such fundamental technology remains as the basis for electrical systems used in many large aircraft. Continued responsibility in the development of B-36 systems led to a transition from design and engineering to administrative and management duties.
In 1952, Sy became a senior project engineer at the Pomona, California, division of Convair (later part of General Dynamics). He supervised the development, production and improvement of surface-to-air Terrier missiles for the U.S. Navy. From 1961 to 1968, he served as vice president of operations and was responsible for development and production of the Redeye shoulder-launched missile for the U.S. Army. In 1967, he championed construction of the Fort Defiance electronics assembly facility on the Navajo reservation in Window Rock, Ariz.
During his years in California, Gordon served as a director of the Valencia Heights Water Company, as a director of the Foothill Country Day School of Claremont, California, and as president of the Ridge Riders Association of Covina, California.
In 1968, Sy returned to the Fort Worth division of General Dynamics. He served as director of manufacturing and vice president of operations during the facility's production of the F-111 swing-wing bomber and the initial development and production of the F-16 Fighting Falcon air-superiority fighter, which remains in service throughout the world.
In 1977, he transitioned to a new role as a consultant. For many years, he served as an adviser and supervisor of subcontractors in the development of the Tomahawk cruise missile. Starting in 1991, he served for several years as a consultant to the Swedish government in connection with its development of the Gripen fighter. He continued to work into his early 80s.
The litany of projects and responsibilities, however, draw only an outline of the man. Those who knew him will remember him for his unimpeachable integrity and quiet generosity. While his life was marked by technical expertise and exertion, Gordy had a reserved but playful sense of humor. At his core, he retained a sense of innocent purity that won him the respect and love of those fortunate enough to come within his orbit. We will miss him dearly.
Survivors: Wife of 67 years, Dora; daughter, Cheryl Morton and husband, Roscoe, of West Des Moines, Iowa; son, James Sylvester of Austin; granddaughter, Michele Baird of Berkeley, California; and grandson, Bill Morton of West Des Moines, Iowa.
Service: A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorials: The family would ask that those inclined to commemorate his life to do so by making a contribution of funds or service to an appropriate institution or simply to pause to salute a long and fruitful life.

This is my Uncle Gordy. His work always fascinated me - most of it was classified, and much still is, but I knew he was involved with planes and weapons systems. I loved the professional models of airplanes in the living room. He was the family photographer and took the pictures and movies that recorded the family. I have vast and loving remembrances of him throughout my childhood years. He was a man who was always the strength and support of his family and there wasn't anything he wouldn't do for them. He was kind and funny. He always served as an example for me of what a man should aspire to be - as a person, as a husband, as a father and as a neighbor. His goodness was genuine. We are all better people for having known him.

The cemetery is terraced into the hillside on the north end of what remains of Gardiner, Oregon. Most of the headstones are quite old and some are struggling with the elements and the passage of time. These gravestones belong, for the most part, to the early pioneers of the area.
This picture shows how steep the hillside is with the reference of a 6' tall man.

The bed frame above the grave is rusted, but in remarkable shape for being close to the ocean and in a very wet environment. I have seen these bed frames before and assume that it is a symbol of an everlasting resting place, but have not been able to find a reference in the guides to cemetery symbology. If anyone has a reference to direct me to, I would appreciate it.
We were not able to spend a lot of time here - racing a bit between the raindrops and in search of a meal. We had read that there was an upcoming community of artists and small bistros in Gardiner - their demise preceded our arrival, but their previous existence allowed us to discover this pioneer cemetery.
Gardiner was a harbor community along the Umpqua River. It was founded by merchant Gardiner when his ship wrecked - what was salvaged was moved here and it became a town. It became a noted port for wood mills and wood products. Destroyed by fire in 1880, the town was quickly rebuilt and became one of the busiest port cities on the Oregon coast. It not only shipped out of the area, but ran paddle wheel boats up the Umpqua River. The mills and paper companies were active until 1999. They have since been razed and the land lies empty.

Gardiner is on the north bank of the Umpqua River nearits mouth. It is an historic community of Oregon, and bears the name of a Boston merchant who sought to trade on the river. His vessel, Bostonian, was wrecked at the mouth of the Umpqua on October 1, 1850. Most of the goods on the vessel were saved and moved to the location of what was subsequently the town of Gardiner. The place became the headquarters of the Umpqua customs district in 1851, with Colin Wilson as collector. The community is described in the Oregonian for June 23, 1855. The post office of Gardiner's City was established on June 10, 1851, with George L Snelling first postmaster. The form Gardiner City was used on October 20, 1853, which was the date that Harrison Spicer became postmaster. The official name is now Gardiner.

Pulses, Plants & PersistenceAround the turn of the 20th century, the gold played out and the once bustling Chinese community melted away. But by now Doc Hay and Lung On - Leon as he was known to the townspeople - were valued members of the community, sto they staye on, and Kam Wah Chung and Co prevailed.
The Enterprising Adventurer
Unlike most Chinese who came to the U.S., Lung On could have stayed home, but adventure beckoned. A shrewd businessman, he stocked Chinese goods desired by locals and sold 'Japanese' goods when anti-Chinese sentiments ran high. At his death in 1940, he owned mines, an auto dealership and rental property along MainStreet.

Feeling your pulse to find out what ailed you? Giving you concoctions of strange herbs to cure you? Doc Hay was probably a last resort for the first non-Chinese to see him, but word quickly spread that he cured ills with his herbs and concoctions, bringing patients from hundreds of miles away.
The Golden Flower of Prosperity
Imagine journeying to a distant, strange land where you are a minority; you don't speak the language and hostility is common. That was a reality for Chinese immigrants to Central Oregon in the 1800's. For those who reached John Day, Kam Wah Chung -- the Golden Flower of Prosperity -- was a lifeline, linking them to loved ones and to the lives they once lived.

No food, no work and little hope in war-torn China. Across the Pacific, the Golden Mountain (California) beckons. The catch? Perhaps never seeing your wife, children and home again.
The Way to John Day
In the late 1800's massive hydraulic mining operations based in nearby Canyon City needed cheap labor. Word spread and the Chinese came by the thousands. By 1885, almost everyone in Canyon City employed a Chinese laborer. When their homes and businesses burned later that year, many Chinese moved to the thriving Chinatown centered at Kam Wah Chung.
During the Great Depression, Lung On, Doc Hay and a wealthy local rancher were determined not to allow the banks to close and financially kept them open, kept credit alive and allowed the people in the community to survive the depression. Lung On also opened the first auto dealership in Eastern Oregon in 1921. For periods of time, Doc Hay was the only doctor for miles - more than several days of travel time.
Our day trip to drive to the eastern part of the state to visit the museum was a wonderful day. We enjoyed the museum immensely - they have restored the house and kept as much in tact as possible. It is like stepping back into the turn of the 20th Century. Unfortunately, the museum is not open all of the time and you need to plan for your visit. (Times at the bottom of the piece) We got lucky, as we did not know how limited access was, and were able to get on a tour.
Historically, this was a time of virulent anti-Chinese sentiment, yet these two men became a much loved and respected part of the community. They were buried in the local cemetery among the non-Chinese as a sign of the place they had been given in the community.

The house sits on a lovely city park and would be a perfect place for a picnic.
Prior to entry, you must enter the Visitor's Center to get your complimentary passes, as they only allow a limited number in the building each hour. It is not a place for young children - all standing and listening. If you get to the Visitor's Center early enough, you can watch some great videos about the Museum and the men. Ask and they will direct you to the cemetery where you can pay your respects to Lung On and Ing Hay.

I Want My Global Warming
I was really looking forward to Walking in Graveyards today. I planned to start a new one that I am particularly fond of, and want to finish before the winter sets in. However, it's getting ready to snow...
Usually, the end of September and beginning of October is Indian Summer - not snow. And, I love Indian Summer days.

Update: Friday and Saturday were cold with intermittent showers, hail, corn snow, but Sunday morning, I woke to about 3" of very wet snow covering everything - including those deciduous trees that haven't even lost their leaves yet. Insane weather! Glad the wood is in and split!
Second Update: That heavy wet snow took a toll on the trees - throughout town, trees are down, huge branches are broken and shrubs are mangled. Really a destructive little storm!

Herbert "Hoppy" O. Pishion Jr. of Terrebonne died February 22, 2004 in a construction accident. He was 33.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 at Terrebonne Cemetery.
Mr. Pishion was born August 23, 1970, in The Dalles to Herbert Sr. and Sandra (Broadbent) Pishion.
He graduated from high school at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton.
Mr. Pishion married Deanna Putman on September 6, 1994, in Walla Walla, Washington.
He worked as a licensed building contractor. Mr. Pishion enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his family.

Linda Rae (Cleaver) Neff, of Jackson Creek Ranch, died January 13 of a heart attack. She was 60.
A visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Bend. A funeral will follow at 10 a.m. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Terrebonne Pioneer Cemetery, and a reception will follow at 1 p.m. at Eagle Crest Convention Center.
Mrs. Neff was born May 11, 1946, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Donald and Ariel Cleaver. She attended Dana College in Blair, Nebraska. She married Jerry Neff on Oct. 23, 1970, in Las Vegas.
Mrs. Neff was a homemaker, a teacher and a volunteer. She had also worked in retail sales. She enjoyed decorating, shopping, cooking, entertaining, basketball and gardening.

Bob, the youngest of nine children, was born in Alderson, Pennsylvania, to Addie and Harry Hawley.
He joined the US Navy in 1955 served 10 years. He re-enlisted in 1968 and retired in 1977. He served in the Vietnam War.
He married Charlotte Alvey in El Cajon, California, September 19, 1959 and had five children.
For the last eight years Bob was a part-time employee at Terrebonne True Value. Bob was trained as a mechanic while in the service. He worked as a mechanic for more than 40 years.
His survivors include:

Krystal Elizabeth Raines-Willhite of Crooked River Ranch died August 8, 2002 in an automobile accident. She was 17.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at the City Center Foursquare Church in Redmond.
Krystal was born Aug. 4, 1985, in San Jose, California. She moved to Crooked River Ranch in 1994.
She was a student at Redmond High School and a member of the honor society.
She was also in the Honor Choir at the high school. She was a peer lawyer for four years for Frank Ribich, Juvenile Services Program Director with the Redmond Police Department.
Krystal was affiliated with the City Center Foursquare Church and the church's U Turn Youth Ministries.
She worked at ShopKo in Bend.

Collision kills two at Bend intersectionBy Tom Peterson - Bend Bulletin

Two Central Oregonians died late Thursday night and two more were critically injured when the Honda Civic they were riding in ran a stop sign and was hit by a pickup in southeast Bend.
The driver of the Civic, Tonrell William Brooker, 22, of Redmond died at St. Charles Medical Center. Krystal E. Raines-Wilhite, 17, of Crooked River Ranch was pronounced dead at the scene.
Also injured were Brooker's three other passengers, Nicole Marie Hinds, 15, Rebecca Jo Griggs, 16, both of Redmond, and James Dean "JD" Robinson, 20, of Bend.
Hinds was in critical condition Friday evening with head and internal injuries. She also suffered multiple broken bones. Robinson was in serious condition with a broken pelvis, broken bones around his right eye and an injury to his right arm.
Griggs suffered cuts to her face and a broken nose. She was released from the hospital Friday morning.
Brooker had been drinking before the accident, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office. Hinds' father, Mike, said hospital staff told him Brooker had a blood-alcohol content of 0.01 - well under the legal limit for drivers of 0.08 percent.
The sheriff's office sent a sample of Brooker's blood to the Oregon State Police crime lab, where it will be tested for alcohol and other drugs. Results are expected back in several weeks, said Deschutes County Sheriff's Office Patrol Capt. Tim Edwards.
Brooker was driving his 2,000-pound Civic hatchback west on China Hat Road at 11:17 p.m. when he failed to stop at the stop sign at Knott Road, authorities said.
As Brooker crossed the intersection, 33-year-old Neal Chavre of Bend and his 9-year-old daughter were driving south on Knott in a 7,500-pound Dodge Ram Diesel 4x4.
Chavre was unable to stop in time, and collided with Brooker. The driver's side of the pickup hit the passenger side of the Civic at about 40 to 45 mph, authorities said. Robinson was sitting in the front passenger seat, and Hinds was directly behind him.
An accident reconstruction team made up of officers from the Bend Police Department and Oregon State Police are still investigating the accident and have yet to determine the speed of the Civic.
Initial police reports, however, point out that Brooker was at fault for running the stop sign.
A good friend to the three injured girls said she was following Brooker just before the accident and stopped just seconds after it occurred.
"Their car was totaled, and no one in the car was talking," said Kim Mathiason, 17, of Crooked River Ranch. "Rebecca got out of the car and did not really know what was going on."
Dan MacCormack, 71, whose home is next to the intersection, said he was working on the Internet when he heard the collision.
"It sounded like an explosion. I heard a big bam, metal crunching and a girl screaming," he said. "It was bad news."
Deschutes County Sheriff's deputies were at the scene within three minutes, and firefighters soon followed.
Brooker and Hinds were transported via Air Life Helicopter to St. Charles. The three other passengers in the Honda were taken to the hospital via ambulance.
The Chavres suffered no significant injuries, according to police reports.
On Friday, relatives of Hinds and Robinson gathered in a waiting room outside the hospital's intensive care unit.
Hinds' mother, Carroll, only asked the community to pray for her daughter.
News of Raines-Wilhite's death stunned her friends and family. She had just celebrated her 17th birthday Sunday.
Her father, Jeffery Raines, described his daughter as "very determined, very outgoing."
She was also praised for her singing voice.
"She was robbed last night. She had a 3.9 grade point average," he said. "She was looking forward to being an attorney or a teacher.
"She was really looking forward to graduating early this year as a junior," he said. "We had colleges knocking left and right. She was really looking forward to moving up in the world and broadening her horizons."
Krystal belonged to the Redmond Teen Court and had been active in it for four or five years, her father said. A service for the teen will be held at a later date at the City Center Foursquare Church in Redmond.

Brooker moved to an apartment in Redmond several months ago from Washington, according to his neighbor, Laura Laszik. There is no record of him attending Redmond High School.
Hinds has been a cheerleader, on the dance team and loved to perform and sing, said Glenn Swearingen, Redmond High School choir teacher. Swearingen lives just two houses down from the Hindses.
"Oh, whenever Nicole's around, there's never a dull moment. That's the best way to put it. She's a live wire," he said, adding that she skipped a grade because she is so bright. She will be a junior this fall at Redmond High.
"I just hope Nicole pulls through and makes it here. Our prayers are with her," Swearingen said.
Griggs' mother, Holly, said her daughter came home from the hospital Friday.
"She's home, but she's in a lot of pain," Holly said Friday evening. "We're very grateful that she was wearing her seat belt."
James Robinson was a ninth-grader in the fall of 1996 at Redmond High for a while and then transferred to Baker City High School, according to Redmond High School Principal Dan Purple.
Neighbors living next to Knott and China Hat say the intersection is dangerous and has an inordinate amount of accidents. China Hat Road, however, is well marked with stop signs and has rumble strips to warn drivers of the upcoming stop at Knott Road.
Neighbors said a roundabout would slow traffic, limiting the danger. The Bend City Council and the Deschutes County Commission discussed the intersection during a joint meeting in January.
Bend Traffic Safety Coordinator Deborah Hogan said in January that crash rates were higher at the intersection than in other places along China Hat and Knott roads.
Statistics show public safety agencies have responded to 17 accidents at the intersection since 1996, including one fatality last year and eight injuries. The 911 dispatch center has received 41 calls about accidents there. And, Hogan said, it's likely not all accidents were reported.
Because of a curve and a dip, westbound cars on Knott can't see far enough ahead to the intersection, traffic engineer Robin Lewis said in January. If a roundabout were built, signs would warn drivers in time to slow down and navigate the circle. It could cost about $150,000, including $1,500 for design and study.

A Redmond man caused the Aug. 8 accident that killed himself and a teenager in southeast Bend, according to an Oregon State Police accident reconstruction report made public Friday.
Tonrell William Brooker, 22, of Redmond had four passengers in his 1983 Honda Civic while driving west on China Hat Road at 11:17 p.m. when he failed to stop at the stop sign at Knott Road and was hit by a 4x4 pickup, according to the report written by Senior OSP Trooper Joseph Craig.
"Brooker is singularly responsible for this collision, all vehicle damage, his own death and the death of Krystal (Willhite-) Raines, for failing to obey a traffic control device," Craig concluded.
Brooker and James Dean "JD" Robinson, 20, of Bend met with several people including Willhite-Raines, 17, of Crooked River Ranch, Nicole Hinds, 15, and Rebecca Jo Griggs, 16, both of Redmond at a Bend grocery store parking lot prior to the accident, according to witnesses interviewed after the accident.
The group then went searching for a party in the China Hat area in a caravan.
Willhite-Raines was driving her own car, and Hinds and Griggs were her passengers. At some time on Knott Road the girls decided to park the vehicle because it was low on gas, according to a witness. The three girls then climbed into the back seat of Brooker's Honda Civic.
"Witnesses stated that the Civic was traveling at a high rate of speed, 65-85 mph, and beer cans were being thrown from the vehicle. The witnesses observed the brake lights ‘flicker' for a second as (the Civic) ‘ran' the stop sign at an estimated speed of 65 mph."
As Brooker crossed the intersection, 33-year-old Neal Chavre of Bend and his 9-year-old daughter were driving south on Knott in a 6,800-pound Dodge Ram Diesel pickup. The driver's side of the pickup hit the passenger side of the Civic at about 44 mph, according to Craig's report.
Brooker had a blood-alcohol content of 0.014 percent, well below the legal maximum of 0.08 percent. Between five and seven beers were found in the Civic, Craig wrote.
Raines-Willhite was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Brooker died later at St. Charles Medical Center.
Hinds suffered broken bones, head and internal injuries. She remained in a coma in critical care at St. Charles on Friday.
Robinson suffered a broken pelvis, broken bones around his right eye and an injury to his right arm. He was discharged from St. Charles on Wednesday. Griggs was released from the hospital the day after the crash.

Mildred Joy (Ryan) Yeaple, of Crooked River Ranch, died January 7, 2007 of natural causes. She was 76.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Ranch Chapel in Crooked River Ranch.
Mrs. Yeaple was born October 28, 1930, in Phoenix to George and Marian (Shryak) Ryan. She graduated from West Linn High School. She married Bryan Yeaple on April 5, 1951, in West Linn.
Mrs. Yeaple was a homemaker. She was a member of West Linn Baptist Church and Ranch Chapel.
She enjoyed rose gardening, reading, singing and quilting. She moved to Crooked River Ranch in 1996.
