William grew up in Bend, Oregon. He was a journalist at heart, working for the Bend Bulletin as a photographer before he went to the University of Oregon Journalism School. He worked for numerous news agencies in the Pacific Northwest, including: Salem Capital Journal, La Grande Observer and the Associated Press in Boise, Idaho.
