William "Bill" R. Smith of Albany died Sunday of natural causes. He was 73.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Cemetery Block 16.

Mr. Smith was born April 22, 1928, in Coos Bay. He married Patricia in Coos Bay.

He worked on tugs boats. He then served in the U.S. Army until 1948.

Mr. Smith married Jeannie.

He worked as a log scaler for the Columbia River Log Scaling Company until he retired in August of 1990. He married Dorothy in Reno, Nev.

Mr. Smith was a member of the American Legion of Albany and Elks Lodge. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling and painting.

Survivors include his wife of Albany; two stepsons, A.J. Chappell of Port Orchard, Wash., and Bruce Chappell of Oakley, Calif.; four daughters, Shelly Smith of Vancouver, Wash., Penny Gutierrez of Albany, Kelly Jacks of North Albany and Katy Higgins of Lebanon; four stepdaughters, Janice McCoy of Bonanza, Beth Highsmith of Bend, Linda King of Diamond Springs, Calif., and Lois Vaughan of Virginia; one sister, Patricia Edwards of Bend; seven grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, parents and one son.
