Ervin Orville Thayne, of Bend, died Thursday. He was 80.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bend. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. April 15 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Loomis, Calif.

Mr. Thayne was born Aug. 7, 1927, in Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Nephi and Orissa Thayne. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education. He married Freda Whetten on Aug. 30, 1951, in Mesa, Ariz.

Mr. Thayne served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was an elementary school teacher, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the National Education Association, the Boy Scouts and the Scholarship Committee for Hispanics. He was a youth leader and participated in church missions. He enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica and learning languages. He moved to Bend more than two years ago.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Russell, of Chico, Calif.; three daughters, Karen Mattson, of Bend, Marie Kehrer, of El Dorado, Calif., and Tonya Chase, of Harrisonville, Mo.; three brothers, Rey, of Salt Lake City, Lloyd, of Layton, Utah, and Darrel, of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Lela Graves, of Lancaster, Calif., and Dorothy Bodily, of Ogden, Utah; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by fiive brothers and five sisters.

Niswonger-Reynolds Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
