George Ewen Cleveland was born February 8, 1918, in Union, Michigan, to Lloyd J. and Leila W. Cleveland. He passed away October 26, 2009, in Portland, Oregon.

George was raised in Union, and his first eight years of school were in a 20-student, one room schoolhouse one-half mile from his house. To attend high school, he had to cross the state line into Indiana, where he attended and graduated from high school in Elkhart in 1935. He then attended Michigan State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Forestry in 1939.

He started his career with the U.S. Forest Service in Michigan in 1939. In 1941, he married the love of his life, Evelyn Hill, who passed away in March 2003. In 1946, George moved his family to Oregon when he transferred to the U.S. Forest Service's Sisters Office. He left the U.S. Forest Service in 1951, but continued his career in forest environments, working for LELCO Inc., Brooks-Willamette Industries, and Diamond International Timber Management. He retired in 1982. He knew every logging road and all the best hunting (game and more!) in the Deschutes National Forest.

Active throughout his life, George was a charter member of the Eastmont Baptist Church in Bend, Oregon, and a member of the Bend Masonic Lodge, York Rite, Scottish Rite, Order of Eastern Star, Al Kader Shrine and Elks Lodge. He was also a member of the Society of American Foresters. When his boys were small, he coached Little League Baseball for six years. His hobbies included baseball, hunting, fishing, golf and traveling.

George is survived by his sons, George L. Cleveland and Andrew W. Cleveland; daughters-in-law, Sue and Judi; granddaughter, Whitney B. Cleveland; grandson, Casey E. Cleveland (Molly); and great-granddaughter, Finola B. Cleveland; niece, Ann Cleveland Mann; and nephews, Herb Cleveland and John Cleveland.
