James Maxwell Munro of Bend died Thursday of natural causes. He was 96.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Munro was born June 10, 1909, in Boise, Idaho, to James and Estelle (Cupp) Munro. He married Elizabeth Winstead in 1945 in Boise.

Mr. Munro served in the U.S. Navy from 1926 to 1930 aboard the USS Lexington, and was later stationed in Pearl Harbor. He later rejoined the Navy, serving from 1942 to 1946 aboard the USS Mascoma. He then served in the Naval Reserve from 1949 to 1965. He was a radioman and achieved the rank of chief petty officer.

Mr. Munro worked as a hoist operator in mines in Atlanta, Idaho, and Sheep Camp, Calif. He also worked at the Oregon State University language department and as an accountant with his father in Boise. He retired to Bend in 1999. He enjoyed storytelling, reading, writing his life history and short stories, music, woodworking, electronics and family and friends.

Survivors include his son, James of Bend; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter.
